Handwriting Group (Ages 3-5 and 6+)

Join our fun handwriting groups led by pediatric OTRs, using HFS® activities to build writing skills through play.

We’ll focus on fine motor strength, pencil grasp, pre-writing strokes, visual-motor coordination, and attention—all while making learning feel like play.

Ages 3–5

At this stage, it’s less about writing words and more about foundations such as developing the strength, coordination, and control needed for future writing success.

Fine Motor & Hand Skills

  • Developing hand strength and finger dexterity

  • Using both hands together (bilateral coordination)

  • Improving grasp patterns

Pre-Writing Strokes & Shapes

  • Drawing vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines

  • Making circles, crosses, Xs, and squares

  • Beginning to form simple shapes and letters (often the letters in their name)

Visual-Motor & Cognitive Skills

  • Copying basic shapes and patterns

  • Matching and sequencing activities

  • Developing eye-hand coordination

  • Understanding left-to-right progression

Posture & Motor Control

  • Sitting upright with stability at a table

  • Shoulder and arm strength for controlled movements

  • Crossing midline (using one hand across the body)

Emergent Writing Skills

  • Scribbling with intention (not random marks)

  • Imitating and copying letters and numbers

  • Beginning to write their name (usually around 4–5 years)

Ages 6 and older

handwriting shifts from pre-writing foundations to more refined skills for speed, accuracy, and endurance.

Fine Motor & Hand Development

  • Using a mature tripod or dynamic tripod grasp

  • Strengthening hand muscles for longer writing tasks

  • Improving finger control for smaller, precise movements

Letter Formation & Legibility

  • Writing all uppercase and lowercase letters with correct start/end points

  • Consistent size, spacing, and alignment on the line

  • Correct letter orientation (avoiding reversals like b/d, p/q)

Writing Fluency & Endurance

  • Increasing writing speed without sacrificing neatness

  • Copying sentences and short paragraphs from the board/paper

  • Building stamina for longer writing assignments

Spacing & Organization

  • Using finger spaces between words

  • Writing within lines and margins
